In the Building Trades section of this class students are exposed to a wide range of skills, techniques, and experiences that are related to the building industry. We explore wood from the ground up, looking at cellular structure of trees, identifying species, and testing the different compositions of the grains of various trees. We learn and practice joinery, the various ways that we can attach pieces of wood together. We use woodworking projects to practice measuring, cutting, sanding, and finishing. Students are introduced to myriad power tools focusing heavily on safety and effective operation. We learn about framing, trim work, roofing, among other building skills. Students also delve into design using both hand-drawn and Computer Assisted Design (CAD). The final element is budgeting where students learn to keep track of material and labor expenses in order to manage costs on our projects.
